Recommended Hosting

Most customers choose to buy shared hosting as part of their website design package, as this can save you money.  If you choose to arrange your own hosting I can recommend a company called Just Host.  For the majority of my customers this company will be suitable for their hosting requirements. Always check the terms and conditions of your chosen host before signing up.

Why I Use Joomla

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. Therefore, the savings from not having to buy expensive website development software can be passed on to the customer.

What's a content management system (CMS)?

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video or downloadable documents and files. A major advantage of using Joomla is that since the CMS manages all your content, the time saved from this efficiency mean websites are quicker to build and therefore cost less in design and maintenance.

The style of your website can also benefit from Joomla Templates. These templates can be applied in minutes to totally overhaul the look and feel of your website. The website content does not change so the whole website does not have to be rebuilt. Templates can be bought straight of the shelf, modified  to suit your requirements or custom designed for a small fee.

Technical requirements for Joomla

Software Recommended Minimum More information
PHP [1] 5.2 + 4.3.10 http://www.php.net
MySQL [2] 4.1.x + 3.23 http://www.mysql.com
Apache [3]
(with mod_mysql, mod_xml,

[1] Do not use PHP 4.3.9, 4.4.2 or 5.0.4. These releases have known bugs that will interfere with installation. Zend Optimizer 2.5.10 for PHP 4.4.x also has serious bugs and you should ask your host to upgrade to a newer version. Joomla is not yet compatible with PHP 5.3

[2] Joomla is not yet compatible with MySQL 6.x.

[3] In order to use SEO URLs, you will need to have the Apache mod_rewrite extension installed.

[4] Joomla is optimized for Apache, but also runs on Microsoft IIS (though not officially supported).
